Compose the email in a text editor (like TextEdit), then copy and paste into the AOL mail window.
If AOL is timing you out, then you can't do anything about it -- that's on AOL's side, and you don't have any control over what they do.

Are you using dial-up? If not, then there is nothing to be gained by using the AOL Desktop client for email. Mail handles your AOL messages just fine. It uses the IMAP protocol. Use Mail or whichever IMAP email client you like best to send and receive AOL mail.
