Can anyone help me? Recently I got the Apple Cinema 20 inch display as a gift. I am trying to use it on my old Powermac G4/450 AGP Desktop and find that the connectors don't fit. My G4/450 has an ATI Rage 128 Pro card.
Do I need to get a new graphics card? Or can I simply use Apple's DVI to ADC adapter (http://www.apple.com/displays/adapter.html)? Which solution would you recommend? Thanks.
You can use the DVI to ADC adaptor -- in fact, you'll need it to connect the new display to the card. Just make sure that your Rage 128 card has a DVI connector on it -- I've got one, and it does not have the DVI connector -- only a VGA connector.
If your card doesn't have a DVI connection, you'll need a VGA to ADC connector.
I highly recommend getting a new graphics card. You'll see a significant boost in graphics ability with a new card -- check http://www.owcomputing.com for cards -- they have good deals, and you may be able to find one with an ADC connector, negating the need for an adaptor altogether!
Thanks! http://www.owcomputing.com is indeed a great site. They showed pictures of the GeForce cards and it is now evident that my ATI Rage 128 card has a VGA, not a DVI slot. So a new graphics card is indeed in order.
Although the Apple Cinema Display (ACD)-compatible NVIDIA GeForce cards are nice, they are not compatible with my Powermac G4/450 AGP Sawtooth system. So I am planning to get an ATI Radeon 7500 card with a DVI output and get the DVI-to-ADC adapter sold by Apple.
