Apple G4 15" 1.67Ghz Start Up Problem

I have recently bought a G4 from a friend the computer has been lovingly looked after and i have had no problems until last night i changed the power management and downloaded the Red Alarm clock widget from Apple.com. Since then i have not been able to start up my laptop. It is making a clicking noise and the fan is working. The start up chime works the screen lights up and then a flashing smiley face and question mark appears. I have so much work to do this week. Please can anyone help or at least let me know just how bad it the damage is. I would be extremely grateful for any feedback.

Does the clicking sound like a mechanical clicking? Perhaps coming from the hard drive area (somewhere in the palm rests)?

If so, that could be an indication of a failing or failed hard drive. In that case, there's not much you can do other that install a new hard drive, reinstall OS X, and restore your important files from the backups that you keep.
