Apple Menu

control-eject on the pro keyboard functions as the power key and brings up the dialog in both 9 and X. It will not turn the computer on however. Also all of Apple's monitor's power buttons turn the computer on, not just the cinema display's.

Try the control-eject trick on your computer to see what I mean,

good lord, does it matter if it has an Apple icon or say "Special'? The funtionality of the new Apple menu is perfect. Where do u go to customize your Apple? THE APPLE MENU. How do you log out of your apple? THE APPLE MENU. DUH.

That said, why shouldn't it be an apple? Where else would u expect that sort of thing to be?

And as far as not wanting to use the desktop: THEN DON'T. Its a multi-user system. If something winds up on your desktop, YOU PUT IT THERE, and you should feel right bad about it as well.

Everyone has the option of NOT using those features. NOT using them is built-in. But so should USING them. Because Macs are supposed to be personalized.

And why WOULDN'T you want an APPLE menu on your APPLE computer's OS? Are you some sort of Windows convert, who belives in overcomplicating everything to appear highly educated?

Apple Menu has been useless ever since System 7.1. I'm hardly a windows convert, what an odd comment.

The Desktop is annoying and can't be disabled. I'd like stuff dragged to the desktop to be rejected like drags to the menu bar. It's also a bit annoying that Cocoa apps don't have alias manager support yet so they can't use the Internet Config download directory default.

All I want so far the Apple Menu is concerned is to get rid of it.

Huh?

You want to get rid of Apple Menu? No way! I using Apple Menu since 7.1. it's useful able access to hard drives by alias in Apple Menu. Its so easy to access real fast. I don't understand why people don't use Apple Menu? Or people didnt know how to use Apple Menu? Or people said "what Apple Menu for?"

Sorry Strobe.. I don't know WHAT KIND of Mac user you are but your not a true one.. you spend more time bashing Mac all over this website and it's threads than actually enjoying the OS and trying to help others WITHOUT being a smart @$$ .. sorry dude but if Apple messed up the OS so much.. THEN SWITCH. Sorry but someone had to say it.

The Apple Menu made sense in System 6 and prior when it was the only method to run multiple things--DAs. However in 7.1 it was pointless.

Instead of using the Apple Menu I used Now Menus which was a billion times better. I mean criminy, the stupid Apple Menu isn't even Drag+Drop aware.

In OS X I use Drop Drawers which I find even easier to use than Now Menus.

The Apple Menu: post-System 6 there have always been better alternatives. It's an anachronism.

Agreed. If one is so ignorant to not even stop to appreciate this amazing OS to complement an amazing computer line (17 years in the making!), then they should join Gates (shudder) and his minions.

Strobe-

When the system 6 using apple menu for system and make sense but why we have control panel? They decide to change new ways of Apple Menu for quickly access. That time we don't have dock or GoMac. It has been doing since 7.0 to 9.1. While System 6 only short time. Seem that Apple Menu is important to Apple. I believe they will do it again in future. One of my friend who work at Apple and told me that they will work on more with Apple Menu. Maybe they will decide to switch back to old ways and allow people put anything in Apple Menu. It make sense to me.

Well, I used to like the Apple Menu, but now I'm not so sure...

I don't think I like the looks of that second option...

Why don't hack into Apple Menu and see if we able to put anything on apple menu. If you already know about this. Please let us know. I don't care if this apple menu is for system feaures. Dock is good so we have apple menu too.. I use dock for all Application. Apple menu perfect for me to access to hard drive.

I can't do too much with the Apple menu yet, right now I can only change what the menu's say, and point certain ones elsewhere. I will be poking around more to see if I can get some useful sub-menus working on the menu.

Here's what I did so far...

I went to /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/HIToolbox.framework/Versions/A/Resources/language.lproj (replace language with whatever you are using), and copied out "Localized.rsrc" to the desktop.
I then used QuickConvert to change this into a resource file (just open 'Localized.rsrc' with Quickconvert).

Next I used Resedit to edit the Menu resource (i think it was -29629, but you will see it graphicaly anyway). Then I used QuickConvert to change the file back to a data file, and copied it back.

You can change where this menu item points to by editing the 'Menus.strings' file in the same dir. It currently points to the address "www.apple.com/macosx/downloads/".

I don't know if I can change this to a local file or not (i haven't tried yet) But I will poke around some more and post here if I find out.

Remember, you need root priviledges to copy these files back, and for God's sake MAKE BACKUPS. I locked myself out of the system last night because I forgot to change the 'Localized.rsrc' back to a data file with QuickConvert. I had to boot to 9.1 and copy my backup back.

happy hacking
