My mouse won't respond to moving it on the pad. As I move it starting at the bottom of the screen it will move up a little bit and then revert back to the bottom of the screen; it addition it won't move sideways. It also won't click and open desktop files. I have tried connecting the mouse to another usb port ( it is connected to the port in the keyboard) but no change.
I tried reinstalling snow leopard but no change and even tried a new mouse
but is still does the same thing.
 
What are all of the USB devices connected to your computer?

What happens if you only connect the Apple-supplied keyboard and mouse?

Could it be possible that you have some kind of assistive function turned on in the "Universal Access" pane of the System Preferences, like "Mouse Keys" or something in the "Mouse & Trackpad" pane of Universal Access?
