CUPERTINO, California—April 1, 2005—Apple® today announced that the highly anticipated new version of Mac OS X 10.4, Tiger, would not be released as promised during the first half of 2005.

All further development on OS X will cease until calendar year 2006, while Apple redirects those resources to the forthcoming iFlicks™ Video Store.

“Since Mac OS X 10.3 Panther already rules the world, we've decided to hold Tiger until 2006 to give time to the weenies up in Redmond to catch up” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “In the meantime, we're going to devote our efforts to our new iFlicks™ Video Store, featuring your favorites from Pixar® Animation Studios.” He also added "OS 9 is dead, get over it, people."

I'd actually be happy for this to be true. :p

Panther is working great for me. Bring on the Apple video store + video iPod!

From All Things Apple:

Apologizing for the delay in bringing to fruition Apple's wildly anticipated new operating system, Mac OS X 10.4, CEO Steve Jobs announced this afternoon that all registered OS X users would be entitled to a free upgrade to Tiger upon its ultimate release, when ever that may be.

"For all those who have remained loyal to Apple through the early tribulations of the X operating system, I really think that this offer is long overdue. The Mac platform is just fantastic, and this is a really great offer for all those who have forked out four times already for it."

Registered users of any version of OS X, 10.1 through 10.3, Jobs explained, will be able to download a free upgrade to OS X 10.4 from Software Update. Upon successful completion of this task, all the user need do is enter his unique registration number in the pop-up confirmation dialog box to be off and running with Tiger. When ever it is released.

isn't true also, because on the Mac OS X page it still says 'arriving in the first half of 2005". However: Nice try! :D
