Applescript??

Ok, I'm still getting use to the OS and yesterday I didn't understand what Applescript was/did. So I deleted it.

But..the little Applescript menu button is still in the menu bar, along with all the stored scripts. I know I should reinstall it, but what does it actually do? Do I really need it?

I've been trying to find a place where I can download it and then turn the menu bar option "off" but I can't. Apple.com has a download but the url is broken.

Any suggestions?

Do you NEED it? No. But it's very powerful, and it only uses 3.2MB of disk space. Why NOT keep it around?

Your machine still has AppleScript capabilities — it's built into the OS. If you deleted the "AppleScript" folder in your Applications folder, then all you deleted was Script Editor, which lets you edit and create scripts, AppleScript Utility, which lets you configure some things (like the menu), and some other utilities.

If you want these back, you should be able to get them from your installation disc with the help of Pacifist.

As for what AppleScript actually does, well, it does a lot of things. It can be used to automate simple or complex tasks. For example, you could make an AppleScript to rename a large group of files quickly, or resize a bunch of images, or automatically sort the files in a particular folder. It's very powerful and flexible. Apple includes some useful scripts with the OS, in the "/Library/Scripts" folder. You might want to take a look in there.
