application icons change to folders

I know this is a known problem, but has anyone got a solution to it - I haven't been able to find one on here yet.

All my application icons have changed to folders and the applications are showing as folders with all their program resources as the contents.

Delete files that begin with LS in your <user>/Library/preferences folder (LSApplications; LSClaimedTypes; and LSSchemes), then log out and log back in; or just restart if you feel up to that.
