apps asking for old password

I recently reinstalled the system software (archive and install) to get rid of performance issues and general bugginess.

After that i was forced to reset the passwords for users.
But some applications (like entourage) ask for keychain access, and the only password that works is the old password! How can i get rid of this?

Search around for any .plist or preference files for your software. Try moving them to another directory.
Make sure that you repair any permissions.

PreferenceList files and permissions have nothing to do with this issue.

Once you set the user password for the first time it sets the keychain password to the same thing. The only way to change your keychain password is to use Keychain Access in /Applications/Utilities.

Choose your keychains (session and login) and change the passwords.

If you change your account password, in accounts system prefs, this will also reset your keychain password to the new password. You can 'change' (keep) to the same password, the effect to also change the keychain password works. The only reason to then go to the Keychain Access would be to have a Keychain password that's different from your login password.

Does your Panther work differently from mine, because when I set up accounts and then let the user change the password to something they want they keychains /all/ kept the original passwords.

In fact, I remember there being a warning message at some point reminding me that this only affects user login credentials and not the keychain (maybe that was Jaguar though).

I just 'changed' my password to check that out. Immediately after changing, you get a window that states that 'Your keychain password will be changed to your new account password'
This is an effective troubleshooting tool that can help with certain permissions/password situations.
BTW, the password does not need to be different, you can continue to use the identical password. The change process still happens.
I don't know if there is a difference for limited or simple accounts, or if this only applies to administrators.
