ATi Radeon 9700 AGP

I have a Sawtooth G4 400 and want to upgrade my graphics card, I used to have a Radeon 9000 Pro in my old Sawtooth but I have noticed a Radeon 9700 cheap on the net, will this work in my Powermac?

The AGP slot in your computer is only 2x, and according to ATI's site, it supports AGP 2x and 4x so it should work.

But are you sure you are going to really use it? The 9700 is (was) a great card, but I don't think your CPU will be able to back it up enough to get the full effect. If you aren't going to be gaming, maybe that won't be a problem.

How much is "cheap on the net" ATi has 9200's for 130, which is quite a bit for an older card, but I think it will be more than enough for your computer.

The ATi 9200 is a PCI card, so it would be slower than the 9700 hands-down. On a Macintosh with an AGP slot, I would always recommend going with an AGP graphics card. With just one PCI video card, you're wasting that AGP slot.

I WAS looking to get a Radeon 9000 (cos their cheap) but the 9700 is going cheap, I'm upgrading to a Sonnet 1.2ghz processor and will only be using the Powermac for internet/email, dvd burning, imovie, and general stuff but no gaming.

Woah weird, why the hell did they do that? I just ASSUMED that it was AGP because hardly anyone makes PCI cards any more, and the 9200 isn't that old of a card either.

It's a lower-powered card aimed at users of older PCI-based machines -- basically, just an upgrade to the 7000 (which was discontinued).

I'd still like to get my hands on an original Radeon PCI Mac Edition card. They've only got 32 MB of RAM, but they have great hardware.

i got one of those. paid $150 for it, a sonnet g4/450 and 4 64mb ram stick for my ppc 7500. now the radeon is a second vid card in my da g4. i could never got the tv out to work on it though, other wise, a nice card.
