Audio on macbook not working

So I have the red light showing from my audio port on my macbook. I know this means there is a problem with my audio. and there is - i can't play sound from my internal speakers. When I try to adjust the volume control using F11 and F12 buttons (on standard macbook keyboard) I am unable to, and I have the little "no smoking"/"do not enter"-type logo underneath
the volume control when i am trying to change the volume. I have tried to go into system pref -> sound -> and under the "sound effects" tab change the 'Play alerts and sound effects through:" option to 'internal speakers'
but i am unable to select any options from that pull down menu. I also know others that have said, 'just put a toothpick or paperclip in your audio output port to get rid of the red light' - well i tried that
and the problem persists. I am able to listen to sounds fine when i have headphones on, but as soon as i take out my headphones- no internal speakers. I have also done the obvious - restart/shut down and wait a few minutes- option, and making sure my applications aren't muted. any other suggestions? thanks in advance!
Update - I also did a SMC reset, and that didn't work :(
