Avie Tevanian to leave Apple?

According to SFGate.com, Avie Tevanian is due to leave Apple at the end of March. MacRumors.com also mentions the story, as does MacWorld UK. Tevanian is "Apple Computer's Chief Technology Officer" and he worked on development of the Mach kernel, used as the basis for OS X. He also worked at NeXT.

His last day is said to be March 31st, according to Katie Cotton, Apple's Vice President of Worldwide Corporate Communications. Apparently, he plans to take time off and then pursue "other interests."
 
It's a sad thing. But I think Avie's most important contributions have already been made. The only thing I fear is if he jumps ship to the competition and develops something *gasp! perish the thought!* better.
 
What would be interesting to see is Tevanian assisting with the main open source desktop environments who REALLY need his expertise. This would be a boon for those using open source OSes and being able to push that initiative in places where neither a Mac or Windows computer would be an option. Just my little pipe dream, I guess. :p
 
sad news indeed if it is true, avie helped start it all with the mach kernel and nextstep. He is such a brilliant engineer, a great team leader, and has helped set software wide engineering goals at apple for years. Not only is he a genius but he seems to have a great sense of humor. A dark day indeed if this is true, not many people have the talents and smarts as avie tevanian.
 
Since it's not April 1st, I say b**sh*t to that, r3andy. As I said elsewhere: Now that Avie goes, Apple, can you _please_ focus on fixing the Finder? ;)
 
This Mac360 article brought up a good point that might make investors nervous. Tevanian and Rubenstein retiring on the same day will make most any investor timid about Apple stock.
