MacBooks tend to eat hard drives, but yes, you can try booting to your restore DVD, and using the Restore function to attempt a backup of your drive.
You should try a "Repair Disk" first, as you may find out that the drive is either not showing in Disk Utility (and has likely stopped working) - or reports that the drive cannot be repaired, etc.

You can also use disk utility to create an image of the drive. Just plug in your external HD to have a place to save the .dmg file.

If I make an image of drive
how would I restore email, doc etc from image
After clean install of computer

I am a pc person this mac stuff is all new

Thanks

After loading the OS, create a dummy user with a different name than any user you had on the system. Mount the disk image, then go to applications/utilities/migration assistant and migration assistant will put everything back like it was, even your apps.
