Bad Ram Slot in my Dual 1.25 GHz Mirror Drive Door G4?

Greetings all,

I got a terrific deal on some RAM and installed it, but the third slot DIMM2/J23 always appears as empty. I've tried every combination and all the DIMMs work fine in every other slot, but that one just won't work. Again, each DIMM works perfectly in any combination, but the DIMM2/J23 appears dead.

I've read a few things that suggest that I may need a new logic board to fix this. I really hope that is not the case.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately there is no other option than installing a new logic board, this problem is not unheard of.

Well. I was afraid of that. Thank you for the information. I guess the next time I buy a machine I will have to test all the DIMM slots myself while it's still in it's warranty period. Overall, I love this machine, aside from the fact that its first logic board fried its self within the first six months and now this one has a bad DIMM slot so I'm eternally stuck with 1.5 gigs of RAM as opposed to the possible 2 gigs.

Howabout running the Apple Hardware Test CD in a loop many times? This could possibly confirm whether or not the RAM slot is truly dead.

I've removed all the extra things I've added, except for the additional hard drive, but it says that the Apple Hardware Test is not compatible with my machine. Do I need to remove the extra hard drive as well to do the test? I am running Tiger 10.4.3.

Strange... I don't see why it would tell you that your computer is not supported. Have you ever tried running the hardware diagnostic CD in the life of your computer?

It may very well be the hard drive, although I don't see why it would complain about that. If it's convenient, remove the hard drive and place the original back in and see if the hardware test works.
 
Try hitting the PMU button on the Logic Board. Disconnect the power, then push the button only ONCE.

It's located on the Logic Board near the edge to the right of the IDE connectors.
 
I tried the PMU button to no avail. Question: If my original logic board was replaced, would that make a difference with the Apple Hardware Test?

Back when I first had problems with this machine, I ran it. I haven't since getting it back with a new logic board, but that was back in September of 2003.
 
Rember hasn't detected any problems, but I've only run it twice. I'm going to run infinite loops while I'm at work today.

Edit: Rember crashed so I have no idea how long it ran or if it found anything.
