Best OS X Web Browser? Question?

some people always say when I post a message I am not specific in my titles...

I hope I am being specific.

I use Netscape 7.01 OS X as my primary web browser... I hate IE 5.2.. (I used to love IE 6.0 for PC-Wintel...) but since the "Switch" I hate it with passion

I used safari... but didn't like the bugs you guys reported on the main rumor section... so I deleted it.

So what is really good to use? Chimera? Omniweb? Anyone?

i'm guessing many people are going to tellyou to try safari more. next will come chimera. some will still stick with omniweb.

personally i have been an icab fan for a long time. with a little pref tweeking it is very fast. it has some problems with rendering certain cs, but at least it shows all the info and links. scrolling is smooth. caching is highly configurable and works well. good cookie support and password memory. i'm not trying to sell anybody on it, but it still works best for me since i can't switch to safari yet.

My friend was telling me a little about Omniweb but what scared me is 29 dollars for it... I don't want to buy it.

you can use all of them for free. you just a lttle reminder box when you launch them.
at least with icab and omniweb you do.

They each have their strengths, and weaknesses. I use Safari for my day-to-day browsing - it's fast and efficient. OmniWeb for when I want to grab huge chunks of information and pictures and look over it later, or for when I have to download a long list of bitsy-piecy things. Mozilla and Netscape are good for when you want to do a lot of things at once. And Chimera just looks cool, with all the good features of Mozilla. I still keep IE in my dock, for its ability to save a page as a single compiled file with all formatting and images intact, and because it has a good download manager.
I'd suggest you give them all a go and see which suits your style. Don't be put off by the bad press Safari has been getting here ... many of the flaws have already been patched with the new beta.

Personally, I think Safari is garbage. I don't care what people here think. When Apple's supposed flawless browser can't log onto bank account, school records or even Hotmail, it's not good. Besides the bookmark system in Safari is pure garbage regardless of what Steve Jobs says. When the system ain't broke, don't fix it. Apple obviously thought it was broke.

Chimera is the best lightweight browser. It's quick, it blocks popups, it loads any web page you throw at it. It's just great. Its integration of RealVideo and Windows Media Player is lacking though. Plus, I would have like cookie management that allowed me to block third-party cookies.

Mozilla is what Chimera should have been from the get-go. It is the best browser period. It's slow though to load initially, but you can block third-party cookies, block popups, block unwanted images (banners) and so on. Its appearance can be changed as well. The only thing I dislike is the inability, on the mac, to remove Mozilla Mail and all the other extra features.

Try Chimera and Omniweb and choose yourself of those.

I'd say Chimera .. but try yourself! Mozilla is too heavy and i hate it's mail and IM-programs - i never use them. And it's really ugly unless you change its look. Omniweb .. hmm, i liked it more but never really liked it. So, Chimera ... Tabs, tabs, tabs .. and i like its bookmarks and speed. And where it doesn't work iCab, then after those 2 Internet Exploiter... :D

I recommend you post a poll:
"What browser would you reommend me ?"

Tell me your browsing needs, I'll tell you your browser.

- programmer documentation > Links
- fast browsing > Safari
- fast browsing, tabs > Chimera
- user shorcuts and other advanced features > OmniWeb
- Netscape with tabs > Mozilla
- a little reminder box > iCab ( hi Ed! ;) )
- Ads everywhere > Opera
- Crap, crap, crap, autofill > Explorer
- Nothing > Phoenix
- Help browsing > Help Viewer
- I'm not connected to the Web > HTMLViewer !
- I'm Herve > TextEdit

Almost all of them have Flash, Java, popup blocking usw. (Okay, the beginning of the list is serious, not its end).

<personal advice>
Chimera is very good. In fact you can browse the whole Web one hour a day with it, that's what I do. Mac geeks prefer Safari. Complicated people prefer OmniWeb to get features they use once in a month. For my own, all I need is Chimera :D
</personal advice>

I'm curious to know what the the browsers' stats are on this site (ie how many people use Chimera to connect to macosx.com, how many IE users etc.). Scott ? Could you open Pandora's box please ? ;)

Right now I'm actually using Safari. However I still usse Chimera quite a bit. I keep both in my dock along with IE and Mozilla (my wife uses those two). Usually they are both open. It just depends on the mood I'm in. They both feel about the same speed. Sometimes I think Chimera is actually faster. I enjoy the tabs from Chimera, but it doesn't make or break my browsing experience. Tabs a nice feature to have. I think it will be a shame if the Chimera developers give up. I feel its one of the best non-apple programs for OS X.

Now, I've said my piece.

OmniWeb doesn't give you a popup, it brands "UNLICENSED" across the browser screen if it's idle for like 5 minutes or something, and then disappears as soon as you move the cursor.

I think that's a cute alternative to pop ups. However, I think paying for a browser is a little much. Until they come up with some that will browse for me telepathically, they're all prett much the same (I know I'm gonna get flamed for this one :p). They turn web pages from HTML and scripts to pictures and text. I personally use OmniWeb, but only until Chimera comes out in 1.0, then I'm going there since it's slightly faster than most of the competition. I use OmniWeb because it's quick, looks cool, but it's basically the same as the rest IMHO.

Ok, retort away ;)

There is no "best OS X" browser. Asking that is like asking what the best car is... it really depends on your needs and preferences. It's a very personal decision.

Some browsers have oddball features that you like (for instance, Opera would show you the rate of data transfer in it). Others are built to be speedy (Chimera and Safari, Chimera being a little more full-featured at the moment). And other browsers really are built for compatibility. (Mozilla is the open-source, strict standards compatibility one)

Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Chimera, Opera, iCab, OmniWeb, and Safari. You have those eight options. You've got to test drive each one for at least a little while, and find the best one for you.

(btw, is iCab's icon STILL that damn Taxi sketch with red writing? I HATE that. lol sorry. Pet peeve of mine.)

My browser list is as follows:

1) Safari
2) Omni
3) IE

if I had opera I would use it because it is also a really nice browser. I have given up on netscape, and dont really like IE. I only keep it for the problem sites

I don't remember Apple claiming that Safari was flawless, in fact isn't that why it's called 'BETA'?

Also just for the record, Safari is the first browser (besides IE) that has been able to log into ALL my bank and credit accounts.

I personally find the bookmarking system very easy to use, and it is also the first browser that has been able to display Real Media files for me. If only it had tabs there would be nothing more that I could wish for...
