Boot up problem

I have a problem with my Mac book when it comes to booting up. When i press the power button, it goes on but writes " please press and hold the power button to restart". It does this over and over again and nothing happens. What could be the problem and what can i do to fix it?
 
That's a "kernel panic," and can be caused by either software or hardware. Have you recently updated any system-level software, or perhaps upgraded the RAM in the computer?

Can you try a "Safe Boot" by holding down the Shift key as the computer starts up?
