Booting from USB drive

I have a laptop drive that is in one of those housings that allow you to access the drive from the USB2 port. After using Carbon Copy cloner on the drive, how do I get my mac to boot from the USB drive?

Did you make the Clone bootable in CCC?
Is the drive you're using capable of booting?

I hope it's bootable. What key do I press during startup to find out?

See if it's listed in your startup preferencepane.

Use the Option key on boot.

Yep, if it's a Pismo or earlier, then it's incapable of booting from an external USB device.
