Broken Mac 10.4.11 won't load on 10.5.4 install DVD

I agree, Apple provided the wrong reason, or you misunderstood what they told you.
If you wiped your hard drive using Windows, then the real reason you couldn't install OS X is because the Windows install disk likely left it with an NTFS format, which the Mac Installer won't be able to use until you use the OS X Disk Utility to remove that partition first. It will tell you it can't install on this computer, and it's because of the NTFS partition. And, if you used fat32, the Leopard install is still unlikely to work. That's your real problem, and not some convoluted "10.4.x first, then 10.5" - which isn't necessary unless you have one of the drop-in upgrade DVDs that were put in the box when Leopard was first released. The DVD will say 'drop-in upgrade' on the label of the DVD. If you don't see that, and the disk is black with a purple 'burst' on the label, then you will be good without having to start with 10.4.x first.
The restore DVD from Apple is OK, as it includes the bundled software, in addition to the OS X install. And you will be able to upgrade directly to Leopard, whether you have an upgrade or a full install DVD. So, all will be good then....
