Browser keep crashing?

I have an old iMac at home (Apple iMac G3, 600 MHz, 40 GB, 256 MB RAM) that I am trying to sell. Everytime I open up a brower (IE, Mozilla or Netscape), they crash. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling and that didn't work. I have also increased the memory size of them and it keeps happening. This sometimes happens with Applications as well (PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc.) I have a lot of RAM on the machine so I am not sure what is causing this. Any ideas?

I don't have Norton to run on the computer. Any alternatives to what I can do. Thanks!

What version of Mac OS X are you running? When you say you uninstalled and reinstalled, were you referring to the browser software or the system software?

sorry, I meant to mention I am running on OSX when this happens. I also run apps and browers on 9.2 and it doesn't seem to happen.

when I said uninstall and re-install, I meant I re-install the browsers (reinstall them from a download off the web). thanks!

You can probably fix the problem by deleting the .plist (preference) files associated with the crashing programs.

To access these files, navigate to Home/Library/Preferences, or in a finder window run a search for "mozilla plist", "safari plist", etc. Delete what you find. Don't worry though, the preferences will be re-generated the next time you run the app.

Corrupt preference files are the most common cause of program crashes on launch in OS X, and reinstalling a program does not normally delete or replace its preference file.

If that doesn't work, try creating a new user account as well under OS X and see if the browsers still crash under that new user account. That could narrow the problem down to something awry in your old account.
