Cable Modem ISP Won't Send Email

I just got hooked up for Cox Cable High Speed Internet service. Everything works except that I cannot send outgoing email using Mac Mail. When I try, I get an error message in Mail saying it cannot send the message using the smtp server. (Incoming email works fine.) I have re-entered the Cox Cable incoming and outgoing server information several times, and used the Internet Setup Assistant, but no luck. Cox Cable Customer Support was essentially worthless in helping to solve this problem. Anybody have a suggestion? Thanks.

[I am assuming you meant 'Cox Communications' by 'Cox Cable'.]

What was entered into 'Mail's 'Preferences' window's 'Accounts' 'Server Settings...' ('Panther' - MacOS X 10.3.x, and 'Tiger' - MacOS X 10.4.x; for 'Jaguar' - MacOS X 10.2.x, it was 'Options...' - as used in 'Cox Communications' 'Mail' set up instructions [see below]) button's window's 'Outgoing Mail Server:' textedit field? Should it not be 'smtp.cox-internet.com?
What is, by default, in the 'Server port:' textedit field? It should be '25'

Are you able to go to 'Cox Communications' web browser based e-Mail web site, and send e-Mails?

The 'Mail' set up instructions, by Cox Communications, seem quite simplistic.

Veljo may be correct. Even though 'Cox Communications' 'Mail's settings shows 'Authentication:'s popup set to 'none'; and, if yours is also - set it to 'Password' - and see if you can then send e-Mail messages.

The outgoing email does not require authentication. The outgoing mail server is 'smtp.east.cox.net'; I have this entered correctly. I'll check the server port to ensure it's '25'. The Mail setup instructions on the Cox website are indeed simple, but they haven't solved the problem. I'll change the Authentication to 'password' and try your suggestion. Thanks for your help. I'll let you know what happens.

I also use Cox and they DO BLOCK OUTGOING port 25 to stop spam sending people. So outgoing email to outside SNMP servers like .Mac Mail will be blocked. However you can go around this hurdle easily by changing the SNMP port in your email client to port 587 (in the OS X 'Server Settings button: Mail->Preferences->Accounts->.Mac Mail account (or any other external account). Once in there click on Account information->Other 'Outgoing Mail Server'->then click on 'Server Settings'. change the outgoing 'Server port to 587 and then check mark 'Use Socket Layer (SSL)->change 'Authentication' to 'Password' and fill in your account name a password.

This is what I do on my .Mac mail and it works through my Cox account easily, thanks to Apple.

I tried Satcomer's suggestions, but still got the error message, "Cannot send message using the server smtp.east.cox.net." Re: minckster's suggestions, I will try to see if I can get Gmail's server to work. I have Entourage on my Mac; it had the same problem as Mail. Many thanks to both of you for trying to help.
