I just reinstalled panther because I was getting graphical problems with 10.3.4 im just on 10.3 now, but when I try to change screensaver or desktop I get this.

Where, do you get this? In the crash log? Flashing over the screen? (as in a kernelpanic)
Obvious things to do- repair permissions, should be done after any new software install (i suspect you know how to do this, but if not- go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and hit Repair Permissions).

Otherwise, maybe try updating back to 10.3.2, which i believe was pretty stable
 
Its not the fish I tried that. I have repaired the permissions and that does'nt seem to help. U think 3.2 would be ok? Its strange the problem I had with 3.4 I dont think anyone else has had it. Its in the bug report popup that all the txt is from.

Ok running 10.3.2 and I still cant get thr prefs for desktop etc to stay open, I get 2 secs of the options then it crashes. What else can I do?
 
Go to Applications>Utilities>disk Utility. When that comes up, click on your hard drive icon at the left - usually the second icon listed and then the first aid tab, then Repair Permissions.

Are you the user set as administrator?
 
the permissions dont make a difference, I have repaired them but no change. I think some of my system may be lost as when I reinstalled it did not ask for disc 2.
 
very strangely I managed to click on a screen-saver for the couple of secs it was open for and it successfully changed.
 
Im going to bump this because its really starting to piss me off.

I don't know if we've got this information or not, but what kind of Mac is it and how much RAM does it have? Also, what kind of video card is in there if it's a tower machine?

In addition, those kernel panic logs may seem like they give a lot of useful information, but in actuality, it's really tough to tell what's going wrong from a kernel panic log. It does look like it has something to do with the screensaver, though -- have you added any screensavers to the default ones included with Panther?
 
Thanks for the reply. I have a G4 imac with 512 ram and a geforce fx2 video card. Its one of the first lcd imacs so it runs at 700mhz. I have tried to remove all the screensavers from the prefs folder but it still crashes. Another weird thing is that the picture I have stuck as the desktop is no longer on my HD.

Try rebooting the machine in single user mode, and run fsck -f (I think). Then restart the computer, repair permissions again. Try deleting the other installations of the screensavers...
 
I didn't see whether you tried to _remove_ the Fish screensaver thingie from the ScreenSavers folder, as it seems to be the culprit, afaik. I'd even try to remove _any_ custom screensavers before ruling them out as the bad boys.

Also - and it can't be repeated too often - you should try and create a second user without importing anything first. If that user works alright, you at least know it's neither hardware nor system software but user prefs or app related.
 
Ok, I removed all but the mac os x standard savers and it didn't work, I tried a new account and although it had trouble starting the finder the desktop ss prefs seemed to work. So what do I do now to fix it in my account?
 
Hmmm... let's try this: create a brand-new user and log in as that user. See if the new user account exhibits the same behavior as the old account, or whether it seems to work well.

If it does work well, then we can say that the instability is definitely something with your user account and not in general with the system.
 
I tried the new user account and although the screensaver and desktop prefs dont crash the system is continually accessing the hd and wont start finder?
 
Ok... try starting up from the Mac OS X Install CD (if you've got a retail version, else use the install disk that came with the computer). When you are asked to select a language for installation, choose "Disk Utility" from the "Installer" menu at the top. Run a "Repair Disk" on your hard drive and see if it finds any problems. If it does, repeat the "Repair Disk" until it doesn't report anything else.

Note: this may render your computer completely useless if you've got damage to the installation so severe that Disk Utility cannot fix it. Disk Utility may attempt to repair the drive, but if it can't, you may be left with a completely useless system which would require a reinstall to get going again. If you've got anything important on that drive, it would be a good idea to back that stuff up before proceeding.

I think it sounds like it's time for a good old fashion reformat and reinstall. That always leaves you with a stable system, but you lose everything.
 
I agree, I thought there may be a simple fix for this but it looks like there is not. I will do a clean install as soon as I find something to backup all my stuff onto. Thanks for all your help everyone.
 
i ahve the same problem.. i think it happened after i updated it.

problems that happened

1) cant get into screensaver preference in system prefernce.. (windows closes, states Opengl problem)
2) cant play warcraft (it stats opengl problem)
3) startup login picture is gone.
4) problem getting into Help. (funny characters appear.. only after constant pressing of the 'home picture', does it work..)
5) ANY thing that uses openGL is stuffed...
