Can I get rid of the hard disk icon from the desktop?

I've put my hard disk icon on the Dock, and I'd like to get rid of it from the desktop.

It only gets in the way, uses up space, and it keeps jumping around anyway, and sometimes I accidentally drop files on it and don't realise it and lose them for a while, etc. etc.

Anyway, is there a way of hiding my HD icon on the desktop?

Go to the desktop (or any Finder window). Go to Finder > Properties (or Cmd+,), then on the first tab, uncheck Hard Disks
 
Finder > Preferences, then click the General tab and check and uncheck anything you want displayed or not displayed on the desktop.

I have my hard drives in the Dock instead of the desktop and I find that to be the most convenient for my tastes. Might wanna give it a try -- just drag the icon for the hard disk (or disks) into the right-hand side of the Dock, then turn off the Desktop display of hard disks.
