Can not get ear phones to work

When you plug the headphones in, did you change the System Preferences->Sound->Output preference?

No. That did it thanks on my earlier Power Book G4 you just plugged the ear piece in and it switched. I checked the sound panel and there was no option for ear phone untill you plug the phone in.
