cannot delete mail in leopard

I have a Macbook 1.83 GHz, intel Core Duo with 2 G RAM.
After updating to Leopard, using 'mail', not .mac, I cannot delete mail by hitting the delete button. I must 'move to Mac' and set prefs to delete when closing 'mail'
Is there a way to fix this? If not, when do you expect a fix?

I always use the delete key on my keyboard, which moves the email to the trash. A setting change makes that delete the email immediately, but I prefer the 2-step approach.
What happens if you select the email that you want to remove, and press your keyboard delete key (not the delete button in Mail)?
 
Cannot delete mail with delete key on keyboard. I still must 'move to mac' for each and every email. Surely there must be another way.
