can't boot into target / slave mode

Hi

I had a problem with my PB running Panther as it wouldn't boot into target / slave mode. Obviously this was a bit of an inconvenience as it made firewire transfers between computers difficult from time to time.

I put it down to Panther as I'd never had a problem like this with any of my other PB's.

Having installed Tiger (clean install) I find I've still got the same problem!

Does anyone have any idea what's causing it please? I'd really welcome having this feature back and I'm most confused!

Thanks in advance

ed

What exactly happens when you hold down 'T' when booting up to put it into Target Disk Mode? Does the correct FireWire symbol appear on the screen? Does it refuse to boot? Black screen? Kernel panic? Please elaborate.

Sorry Diablo, that was a terrible explanation on my part! ;)

Basically, it simply ignores the fact I'm holding down the "T" button and boots up normally! Most irritating...

Thanks

Hmm... what kind of keyboard are you using (bluetooth/wireless, USB)?

Sometimes wireless keyboards don't "pair" with the computer until later in the startup process, so if you're using a wireless keyboard, you may want to try a wired keyboard.

Is it just 'T' that it ignores, or does it also ignore combinations like 'C' and 'Command-Option-P-R' and all those startup combos?

I'm using the PowerBook's own keyboard!

I haven't tried any of the other startup combos because I don't use them / know them.

What would be a good one to try out?

Thanks

:)

Strange! Try inserting the Tiger or Panther install CD/DVD, then reboot and hold down 'C'. If the computer boots up from the CD/DVD, then the key combo worked. You can also try "Command-Option-O-F" to see if you can get it into open-firmware mode, but don't do much mucking around with O.F. if you don't know what you're doing -- just type "mac-boot" once (if) it boots into O.F.

I'm assuming it is the 17" 1.33GHz PowerBook in your sig, right?

OK - thanks for your input, Diablo...

Rebooting from the Tiger DVD doesn't work - it just ignores it and boots up to the previous installation with apps loaded etc.

Command+Option+O+F worked fine - I just typed "mac-boot" and hurried out...

You're right - I am using my 1.33 GHz 17P PB...

Weird, huh?

Hi ghost

Thanks for your suggestion - it's certainly worth considering!

I'm just flummoxed as to what's going on with the PB - it's really strange..

Thanks again

Ok I thought I'd post this here and save thread space as its on the same topic. Don't mean to hi-jack your thread applewhore, but I have a similiar problem.

When I hold down T it seems to boot into target mode because the firewire icon appears on my pbook's screen. However I can't see the drive on my PC under my computer.

If I click on the connected hardware tab at the bottom of my screen it recognises the drive but I don't know how to access it. It only recognises the drive sometimes, other times it doesn't and I have to shut down and start the process over again. Any ideas?

I think you might be overengineering.
This may be oversimplfying but if the firewire cable is bad or the firewire port you would display the same symptons.
Also, we have had a lot of units in for repair that have had the ports shorted due to ESD's (Electro static discharge)
Hope this helps.

Your Mac's hard drive is in HFS+ format -- if by "PC" you mean "Windows computer," then that's why you can't see the Mac's hard drive. Windows cannot natively read HFS+ format.

What you want to do will work if you use MacDrive (mediafour.com), or the equivalent, on your PC.
