I'm getting this error when trying to burn DVDs. This happened after updating to 10.3.7 via the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.7 or just the Mac OS X Update 10.3.7.

Problem is with Powermac G4 with a pioneer superdrive. Upgraded 12 machines and most of them now generate this error when trying to burn DVDs.

Please advise. Thanks!

What application are you using to burn? Are you inserting the DVD before it asks you?

After the update, did you repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utility folder?

Yes, permissions were repaired.

Using the utility that comes with the OS (yellow and black radio active icon)

I insert the DVD into the superdrive and it mounts on the desktop, it prompt me for what to do (open finder) and to name the disk.

I checked processes running. iDVD helper was the only process that I could see that might be related to the DVD/CD player. I quit all processes except those needed for the OS, and still got the same error.

The log file read: "Burn error: 0x80020040 On of the volumes on the media is still in use.

Please advise. Thanks!

What kind of blank DVDs are you using? Superdrive has trouble with the DVD+R. And I have read it has trouble with some brands. I found TDK works well. And DVD-R should be your choice when using the Superdrive.

What application are you using to burn the DVDs? If you just want to drag and drop files on the icon in the Finder, then it should work properly the way you're doing it.

If you want to use iDVD or Toast or some other application to burn the DVD, you need to wait until that specific program asks you to insert a blank DVD (rather than inserting it, mounting it and naming it via the Finder). When you insert a DVD and are asked what you want to do with the DVD, you should click "Ignore" if you wish to use Toast/iDVD/iTunes/DVD Studio Pro/etc.

If you're using one of those applications (ie, NOT the Finder), then that's probably why you're getting the "Volume in use" error. When the DVD mounts on the desktop, OS X assumes you're going to use the Finder to copy files over and burn the DVD that way. If the DVD is mounted in the Finder, and you try and use Toast or iDVD or something to burn the DVD, then the DVD being mounted in the Finder isn't going to allow you to do that -- hence the "Volume in use" error.

Any back-up or anti-virus software that would access the DVD ?
