can't drop pins on google maps

I'm sure that this has a very simple solution, but I use google maps quite a lot and have never been able to drop a pin on my IMAC (running 10.85). It says 'right click' to drop a pin but it won't work for me. (I do know that Ctrl click is a right click!)

Is this cos Google want me to 'sign in' first ?

When you right-click on a Google Maps point, you will see a menu. Click on either "Directions from here", or "Directions to here", and that location will be pinned. There is no specific menu item for "pin", or "drop pin", but that is the result.
You can also place a pin by entering a specific address (or business name, or other location or position description)
