Can't email out with Apple Mail

My incoming email seems to work fine, but I'm not able to email out. If I am reading an email and hit the reply button, nothing happens. If I hit new message, I can type in address and subject line, but when I try to type the message, it will only type a few letters and then freeze up. Thanks. I hope you can help.
 
Um what OS X Mail are you talking about? Are you using ISP email services or a third party email service? Has this always happened or did it just start? Can you send regular new messages and just replies don't don't go through?
