Can't select destination volume for install; error starting disk utility

I suddenly cannot install any new software on my iBook. When I go through the installation process and arrive at the screen where I am asked to select a destination volume - there is nothing there!! My Macintosh HD does not show up.

I was directed to Disk Utility, and when I run it I get the following error message:

"Error starting disk utility back ground process"

followed by: "Disk Utility started, but a background process needed in disk utility didn't start properly. Please quit and restart disk utility."

At this point disk utility is completely frozen up, won't force quit, and the only way to quit it is to restart the whole computer.

I have started the computer off the original CD, and in that way am able to access disk utility. Upon doing that, I have repaired both the disk permissions and the Mac HD disk itself. It shows some errors and repairs....yet that doesn't seem to help, because when I log back into my HD the same exact thing keeps happening. I have also booted into Safe Mode - doesn't help.

Help!!!! I don't know why this is suddenly doing this. Does anyone have a fix for this short of reformatting my entire hard drive? I can't even install an update to my Mac OSX at this point! Nothing will install, no destination volume.

You are learn a valuable lesson, computer hard disk will all fail at some time! I bet you now wished you had a backup. You hard disk has died or is dying a slow death.
