Can't shut down or put to sleep

JPigford

I'm awesome...seriously..
I can't shut my Power Mac down or put it to sleep. All I can do is reset it. The only way to actually turn it off is to unplug it.

Also, once I have turned it off by unplugging it, once I plug it back in it won't turn on. I have to unplug my main monitor from the main DVI-out on my video card and then hit the power button and then plug it back in...weird.

What exactly does the machine do when you select "Shut Down" from the Apple menu?
It restarts. I can't put it to sleep either. Everything just restarts.

Hmmm... what USB devices are you using? Any hubs or anything, or just a keyboard and mouse?
I've got the following devices plugged into my computer via USB:

Apple Keyboard
Wacom Intuos2 Tablet (this includes my mouse)
Lexmark Printer
Canon Scanner

Hmmm... do you have the original keyboard and mouse somewhere?

If so, I would recommend trying to shut down the computer while only the original keyboard and mouse are plugged in... USB devices tend to be the ones to point fingers at when it comes to restart/shutdown problems. If it works, then it may be one of your USB devices, or the way that you've got it connected to the computer.

"You ever take it off any sweet jumps?"
I love that movie.

I'm using the original keyboard and yes I have the original mouse. I'll give those things a try.

And yes, the movie is a classic.
"You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face with these bad boys on? Don't even think about it."

removed any additional PCI cards?
Removed a second hard drive?
Any additional memory from original?
Have you run the Apple Hardware test (extended)?
Reseat you video card in the slot.
Absolutely, have you unplugged all extra USB devices?
Keyboard in System USB connector.
Mouse into keyboard.

No help?
Take this G5 in for likely hardware problems (logic board?).

Well, I ran the extended hardware test and:

Error Code:
2MEM/3/4:DIMM3/J14

In a Dual 2GHz PowerMac G5, which slot is that? Like from the top or bottom?

The logic board is marked (tiny, hard to find, but it's there) with the Jxx numbers next to each slot. Memory test failures can be fixed (or verified) by reseating the memory chips. Try swapping the memory to different slots, but don't forget to keep the memory in paired slots.
Always run the hardware test again after reseating the memory.

Well, looks like it's the stick of memory. I moved it to J13 and got the error for that slot now. Hopefully replacing it will solve so me issues. I'm assuming it's better to take out that whole pair instead of leaving the pair in and having one of the 2 sticks bad?
