can't update 3rd party software

Whenever I try to update software safari loads the url but it is just a blank page.
An example: ftp://ftp.micromat.com/techtool_pro_..._installer.dmg
loads in safari but it's just a blank screen!
Software update in the apple menu works fine.
I'm running 10.5.6 on a Powerbook
I have tried resetting safari and using netscape to no avail.
 
The expected behavior for the situation that you described is for Safari to display a blank page while the .dmg file downloads.
