Changing default apps

Hi, I'm quite new to Mac OS X. Came over to the world of Mac from Windows and Linux. I like the system, just got to get to know it a bit more.

I'm wondering if there's a way to change default applications. For example, i want to use Firefox as my web browser, and I can change .html files to run upon execution, but URLs from MSN or About menus in other apps force open Safari. Is there a way around this? Also, do I have to manually change the allocation of all .xml, .htm, .php...files to work on Firefox? I hope the same can be done for default email, FTP, editor programs.

Also, can I change icons of file types across the board? Like .html files with Firefox, can I make every .html file display a Firefox icon?

Thanks in advance for all replies! :D

If .HTML files still want to open with Safari, you can get info (click an HTML file once, press Command-I) and then open the "Open With:" pane. Choose FireFox from the menu (or whatever browser you'd like) and click "Change All."

Ah i see, interesting that changing default settings are found in other apps instead of system preferences. But it works. Thanks for the tip. Did the same for the mail, changed it to Thunderbird. Just one other thing, what about icons? The icons turn to "empty documents" Can I place the firefox logo on all html files? There's no "change all" button for icons. How do I do it?

There is a small utility called ICSwitch that allows you to change default apps on the fly. It can live discreetly in the menu bar, or be run once, set and quit. Very handy.

also try RCDefaultApp. system pref pane to change default apps for any and all protocols.

OK, that's all really good, but I still can't get firefox icons on html files. How can that change? And since Firefox doesn't have document icons, I guess I'll have to download it from somewhere? Any tips?

Following the instructions of El Diablo should work-- but you might have to quit out of the browsers you are switching between for your preferences to take effect.
