any1 knows how? is this even possible?

and what encoder does iTunes use when you rip a cd?

As far as I am aware, there is only the licenced MP3 encoder in iTunes. you have no option to use a third party encoder. Sorry.

You CAN get Oggdrop, and the quicktime plugin for iTunes that allows you to play Odd audio files though, which is very nice.

You can go here:

http://www.stumod.com/code.html

and download the LAME CD Ripper and Encoder. LAME is normally a Command line utility for Linux/UNIX but this program uses the Mac OS X GUI. LAME produces better quality MP3s than iTunes; true bliss for audiophiles. To use it, open the program and select "alt-preset insane" for the highest quality, insert a CD, and click "Rip CD". If you are connected to the internet it will get the ID tags from freedb.freedb.org. I've used this and it works well, no command line stuff necessary, honest to goodness easy to use Macintosh quality software.

You can also issue LAME commands in an "Expert" field that provides much more control to those who know what they're doing. Official LAME documentation can be found here:

http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/USAGE

Hope this helps.
