cloning a HD

I want to clone a HD drive so i can then retreive data (from the cloned HD) using Data Rescue 2. Anyone know what apps must i use to make the clone?

Erh... Can't you just retrieve the data from the first harddrive with Data Rescue 2? About the cloning: SEARCH before posting. There must be a thousand threads about CCC et al.

Im already trying to retieve data from the HD directly but due to ots bad sectors, its taking way too long! Last time the scanning took almost 1month and still it wasnt finished completely.
Whats CCC?

I don't know about that; I couldn't guarantee that Super Duper could clone the drive if there is significant disk corruption, although it has worked for me.

I haven't used Data Rescue so i've no experience of it, sorry. :(

Yep -- as with any "data rescue" or "data retrieval" operation, there is no guarantee that you'll be able to recover anything. Most times you'll be able to recover 50% to 80% of what is there, and the rest will just have to be chalked up as a loss.

If you're getting a lot of bad sector errors, then I don't think that cloning the data to another drive will increase your chances of recovering those files that happened to be located in those bad sectors -- the only reason I can see cloning to another drive helping is if the actual drive itself is mechanically failing -- then it would be a good idea to get the data off of it as quickly as possible. If the problem is not with the mechanics of the drive and is simply due to corrupted data, then you'll simply copy/clone the corrupted data onto another drive, and the data will still be corrupted -- not really a help at all.

What about simply restoring the data from your routine backup? ;)

carbon copy cloner provides a GUI to the ditto tool, which is included with the OS. ditto will generally not give up in the face of disk errors, but continue copying while reporting errors.

ditto /Volumes/BadDisk /Volumes/NewDisk

will copy over everything it can.
