Connection Conundrum

I couldn't connect to some sites eg. Seatubes wouldn't work, said there was no internet connection, Apple Update said the same thing, but I had no trouble whatsoever with sites like this one, YouTube, BBC, plus several others. So what gives? HTTP Proxy, that's what. Firefox 2.0.0.16 btw.

*But*, as I recall, prior to my eMac's nervous breakdown, its eventual repair, and then reinstallation of Tiger, that proxy option was checked, and all connections worked just fine. Anyway, unchecking the HTTP option cured the problem.

What does that HTTP Proxy actually do? Is it necessary, and should it be activated? Any thoughts, analysis or diagnosis from afar?

An HTTP proxy is a computer that sits between you and the internet. If you don't have a proxy computer between you and the internet, then you should leave proxies disabled.

Most ISPs in the USA don't use proxies, either. Some overseas do, though.

Proxies do things like route packets to and from networks, provide firewall support and cache web pages for quicker access.
