console mode in tiger

I have tried to use >console in tiger and i had to cold restart the system everytime


I am wondering what i need to do to fix it.

Please elaborate... what exactly happens when you try and use the Console? And do you mean the "Console" application, or the "Terminal" application?

Do any error messages occur? Does your system kernel panic? Does it completely lock up? It's tough to troubleshoot a problem when all we know is that Console won't work... please elaborate so we can better diagnose the problem.

There are no error messages at all, i get the console login for a few seconds (not long enough for me to login at all) then the aqua interface restarts but there is no return to the login window it just seems stuck with only the familiar blue aqua background.

I tried shutting down fast user switing and among other service process killings and restarts. Still the same result, no >console or a return to the login window when this happens.
