Createing DMG files with images and file placement

Howdy
What is the secret to creating a DMG with a background picture and files placed in certain spots? I keep trying but i keep failing. Either it doesn't remember the background or the files are not where they are supposed to be. Is there a secret? Or do i have to keep playing with it until it works right?

Thanks

Have you tried creating a DMG file from a folder? Go to the Images menu at the top, then select the Image From Folder... selection from the New menu.

If you place your icons, folders and files as well as the background how you want them in that folder, I'll bet they'd stick when you make a DMG out of that folder.

To get that, as ElDiablo said, use a folder. I believe, in fact, that's the ONLY way you can do that...basically you need a .DS_Store file in the disk image.

it was way more complicated than that. first i created a blank image, then arranged it how i liked. remembering to open and close it often because the icons shift for no reason at times. then, when it was pretty, i 'converted' it which got rid of any unused space and kept all my settings.

It took forever to figure out on 10.3 where as in 10.2 it took a minute. I also noticed a stupid little bug. In 10.3, all windows are wider than 10.2 because of the side doc thing. So i'll have to work around that now because if my disk gets opened on a 10.2 machine it looks a little wide. Geez Apple. You make this so hard. ;)

You can "turn off" the sidebar thing by pressing the little clear, oblong button in the upper-right hand corner of the Finder windows to make it easier to position your icons -- a la Jaguar-style.

I would still try the folder-to-image way suggested -- I think you'll find good results with that.

folder-to-image sucked. no positioning or background were kept. But i did click that little clear button and it helped a lot!!
