Hi everyone: I am getting an error/system crash that I have never gotten before. Several times today, a gray translucant curtain drops on my screen and I get an error message in several languages asking me to reboot. I reboot by holding the power button, login and then Crash Manager asks me to send a report to Apple. Has anyone gotten such a system-wide crash before? Any ideas?

Details: Mac OS 10.4.10 on a 1 GB MacBook Pro 2.16. Error occurred twice today just before connecting to a new WiFi system at a public library. Mac seems slow too especially in network connections. Fix permissions, updated prebindings, etc. DiskFirst Aide reports minor disk repair problems.

Thank you for any help!

What you're experiencing is known as a Kernel Panic, and is, in my opinion, the worst error that can occur.

If you are finding any disk errors, you should restart your Mac and boot with the Install disc, by inserting it before rebooting, then pressing C after the startup chime.

Choose "Disk Utility" from the Installer menu, and repair your hard drive ("Repair Disk" button)

This is a widely-discussed issue with 10.4.10 and the MacBook/MacBook Pro model line. Symptoms include random AirPort disconnects and kernel panics while using wireless connections.

While riccbhard suggests some good system-health procedures to keep your hard drive healthy after a kernel panic, they likely won't do anything to remedy this or prevent it from happening again.

We're stuck waiting for a fix from Apple, unless you're open to the idea of doing an archive-and-install procedure and bringing your system back down to 10.4.9 for the time being.
