Hi, My name is Carlo and I am using Mac Leopard on a macbook pro (however, I am experiencing the same problem even when using tiger).
I travel a lot and specially when I travel outside Brazil, sometimes i cannot send or receive emails (its more common to receive but not send emails ) ...depends on the connection and sometimes it occurs on a wired and on a wireless connection. Its like this : I connect on a hotel and i can receive and cannot send emails from my mac mail program. This is very usual...like now I am in the LA airport and could not send emails , not from the T-mobile wireless connection and neither from the HOTEL wired connection that i was before... its really strange...i checked all the configurations on my internet provider...mail server, smtp servers and everything...the messages just cant go out of my computer !!! I was so mad about it that I checked sending emails trough my WINDOWS outlook (on the boot camp ) and the messages were sent !!! It seems that some hotel or airport connections just cannot work properly on a mac....
The message that i got when I pressed "mail connection doctor" was : trying to log into your smtp connection failed. Make sure that your username and passworld are correct.
I checked everything of course...and even...not sending emails !!!

I can surf on the internet, receive emails...everything...i just cant send emails....I also tried to to change the port from 25 to 587 as i see on a tip on this website.
I tried to send one message at a time...could not send also...

Please guys help me...
It really seems that some connections are more " friendly" to PC users than mac and to return to a pc is really not on my plans !!! PC never more.

Some connections, especially fast ones, limit the traffic for outgoing mail clients. So for sending, the only way to send would be to use their predefined mail server and authentication so that they can track what goes out. This usually prevents spammers from using those networks - or if they would use those networks, as they would have to use valid credentials for sending out the mails, they would be very fast to track down and eliminate. And this obviously does not change when using OS X, Windows, or Linux, or any OS or mail program.

Many hotels and hotspots have this same setup. Connection to your usual smtp server fails, when the network has been designed to use some other server and authentication for all outgoing mail. When this occurs, you can either find out the correct details to use (and change them in mail.app), or to simply use webmail for temporary outgoing mails.

no because because, as i told you, when i switch to windows (using the bootcamp from my mac ) the messages go out. I am able to send and receive emails...i just tried, and on windows, tne messages were sent.
Just when I switch to mac os that the messages cant go out.
I have an internet store and i aswered 257 emails that are on hold on my mail program waiting for this problem to be solved... it would cost me maybe more 10 hgours to re-answer each one of these 257 messages using the webmail....what worryes me is that if it works on window, why does not work on mac ? Its not a configuration from the connection...its something on the mac sistem.

When you use the Windows partition did you check out the server settings? Also in Mail you might would have to add a new SMTP server manually (Mail->Preferences->Accounts tab - Out Going Mail Server(SMTP)).

Yes, when I checkd on windows, I created an ac count manually...
On mac, I diud the same...I even deleted the old account, create a new one with all the manual settings and informations and still did not connected to the smtp server.
Still unsolved...guys...it is driving me crazy...

Download a maintenance program like Onyx or Yasu and run the maintenance routines.

Also re-index Mail by opening /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and type: sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum index;

This might help.

I sadly seem to agree with Giaguara...

No matter what I do, I can't seem to overcome this issue with Emails. It seems to certainly be an issue with the host connection not allowing you (me) to use our own smtp outgoing server provider.

When traveling and staying at a private residence, I sometimes have this same problem with their internet access.

I can sometimes change this smtp to be my own and then add a colon - my account and it will work. Example: in Mail Preferences, my Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is smtp.comcast.net. I added an additional account to be smtp.comcast.net:jsmith - jsmith being my account name (not really - just an example). This will then sometimes work.

More often than not though - still no go. Like you said, I can receive, but not send. If staying with a friend, I can ask them for their outgoing SMTP server name, add it to my preferences, set is as the current server from list and my mail will go.

What a pain...

I may be wrong, but I don't see my PC (Windows) friends having this problem.
