Desktop icons don't stay ?

Sometimes when I do a hard restart of my macpro work station the desktop icons revert to default on display and size of the icons.I like to keep them at a small size and on the outer edges of the desktop screen.
anyone have any ideas as how to keep them in the places I like and the smaller size?

Stop doing "hard" resets, first of all. UNIX likes to start up and shut down gracefully -- if you're killing the computer by holding the power button, a good task to investigate is why you have to do this instead of using the safe and standard "Restart" and "Shutdown" commands.

More than likely, a portion of your user account (a preference or plist file somewhere) is getting corrupted when you do these "hard" shutdowns.
