Desktop snapshot question...

When I take a picture of my desktop, either by using the shortcut keys or by opening grab and choosing to capture the screen, the output picture is somewhat blurry after it is saved and re-opened. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance

Could you possibly attach a screenshot?

Also, have you tried converting the file to another type?

Click the item to view it in preview, go to File and Export. Then choose the file type.

Also, has this been a new problem? Or has it been ever since you got yoru Mac?

How exactly are you resaving the files? Screenshots in Panther (10.3) and newer use the PDF format (which is actually just a TIFF or a JPG embedded in a PDF). If you're opening the PDF file in, say, PhotoShop or some graphics-editing program and resaving as a JPG with low quality, that could be where the "fuzziness" you speak of comes into play.

Also, iPhoto as well as Preview uses some image-enhancing technology that works well for the most part, but can make some images appear "blurry" or "fuzzy." This is evident in iPhoto by viewing a photo, and watching as the photo slightly changes about 1/2 second after displaying.

You can use PDF2JPG to change to .jpg or .pic.
It's a script. Download it, and drop it here;

Library>Scripts>Folder Action Scripts

When you take a screenshot, you'll get a dialog for saving to either .jpg or .pic.

How do I get the file smaller than the original to be able to upload it here in the forum? I tried exporting it from preview, pdf -> jpg, however, it is still to large.

try croping it. we dont need the whole picture, just a part that shows the blur.

if you take a screenshot of the entire screen (apple-shift-3) and open it up in Preview, then it is sometimes resized (90% of its true size) to fit the window. is it still blurry after you have zoomed to 100%?

Yeah, so hit Shift Apple and 4, and the crosshairs appear, this allows you to select what you want the shot to be of.
