I was given a Power Mac G4 - have to install system software. I hold down C key as I do this. As I am installing, the hard drive is not showing but I know it is inside. Does make a bad sound when starting up. I have tried disk repair, I have even put in Tech Tools Pro and got nowhere. What are some possible solutions. It came from a local Junior College.

One possibility is that the hard drive is just plain dead. What kind of "bad sounds" does it make when starting up? Clicking? Grinding? If so, then the hard drive is most likely shot. There's no fix for this other than replacing the hard drive with a working one.

If you launch Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Install CD/DVD, does the hard drive show up there?

Yes, it is clicking clicking clicking. I am assuming that it is a bad HD at this point. So going to buy another one. My new question, can latest verions be installed.
