Dictionary shortcut in Tiger no longer works

For some reason my shortcut to use the Dictionary CMD-CTRL-D no longer works when I move the cursor over a word in cocoa apps. Does anybody know how to get it working again?

In what Cocoa developed applications are you performing the 'Command <control> D' - mouse cursor over a word, sequence on?

Go to the 'System Preferences', 'Keyboard & Mouse' Utility and click on the 'Keyboard Shortcuts' tab. Scroll down to 'Dictionary' (click on the disclosure triangle, if it is pointing to the right). Are the check box'es of 'Dictionary' and 'Look up in Dictionary' marked with a check mark?; and, is 'Command <control> (caret symbol) D' assigned to 'Look up in Dictionary'?

A sample of the applications that support the above keyboard / mouse sequence:
'iChat', 'Mail', 'Safari' - with a web page's source code window present ('View, View Source' menu item) or within a textedit (text entry) field, 'OmniWeb' - with a web page's source code window present ('View, View in Source Editor' menu item) or within a textedit (text entry) field, 'Script Editor', and 'TextEdit'.

Give such a try, and post your results.

I've tried it in iChat, Safari, and Mail and nothing. I checked the settings and the correct keys are assigned to Dicationary, and I also tried restoring defaults. I tested it on my PowerBook and it works with no problem, but not on my PowerMac.

Can you try creating a new, temporary user and see if it works under the new user account? This may narrow it down to a corrupt preference or something with your original user account if it does work, and may narrow it down to something system-wide if it doesn't work under either account.

It's too sad that it doesn't work in Safari. Still works for me in TextEdit, though...

Fryke: are you saying that Command-Control-D does not bring up the dictionary entry in Safari for you?

It works for me in Safari...

OK, I figured it out. I tried logging on as a different user and it didn't work there as well. I also noticed that none of my Application icons were appearing in the dock for the new user I created. I then discovered that the symbolic link that I created in the / directory was no longer pointing to the correct volume. I added the link and it started working again.

When I first set up my new PowerMac I created 2 partitions to keep things separate from the main OS X. What a mistake! Everytime I download any updates from Apple it forces the install in the / directory and I have to go and move it then recreate the symbolic link. Now I just want to move everything back to one partition but I can't until I can afford to buy a new external firewire drive that is large enough to hold what's on my drive (250 MBs). This sucks! :)

I have the same problem, but I have no idea what symbolic link Freaky is talking about in the root directory, except that it is something he did himself at some point. Anybody else have any ideas about why this is happening?
