Disk Copy hangs up

Please help an old guy, trying to come into this brave new world.
Using G4 800MHz , 17" flat screen, lots of memory and OS10.2.2
Have been able to copy data and files to a CD, but suddenly the process hangs up. When at the "preparing to burn " point, the barber pole keeps rotating, but nothing more happens. Status says, " Configuring burn". The only way out after 30+ minutes, is to Force Quit. Have tried setting Disk Copy preferences to no avail. The burner works fine if I am burning direct from iTunes! In plain English please, how do I fix what was working perfectly? Thanks for any help you can give! Mike.

Dear Mike,

First welcome to the world of computers and I hope that you like your Mac. They are usually very relieable, but they do go wrong sometimes :)

I will try and make this painless as possible. Here are a few suggestions:

1. You made a note that you are OS version 10.2.2. I recommend that you upgrade you system to the latest version 10.2.6. This is done via the Software Update Control Panel which is in your System Preferences. I know it's a big download, so I hope that you have Broadband :) If you don't, I think that you can order a Update CD for a charge. Contact Apple about this.

2. How much free disk space do you have on your Hard Drive? You maynot have enough free space to create your CD. If you have about 2GB free, you don't need to worry about this.

3. Have you used a utility to 'fix' your hard disk? There is on in your Applications/Utiliies Folder called Disk Utility. Give that a try.

4. If nothing else fails, have you gone to the Apple Discussion forums? There are on the Apple main website, under Support/Discussion. You can find alot of useful information here.

5. If all this fails, ring Apple Support.

Hope you find something useful here. :)

Michael, thank you for your suggestions! Have tried the built in software for disk repair and also the fsck process (thanks to Bob Wood!), but all to no avail. So will be in the process of downloading OSX 10.2.6 shortly.
How is Norwich these days? I was born in Harwich!
Thanks, Mike.
