Disk images fail to mount on 20" iMac

I just set up my father's new 20" iMac which comes with 10.3 and I updated to 10.3.1, but when I attempt to open either an Self Mounting Image (.smi) file or Disk Image File (.dmg)file I get the following error message:

"Warning, The following disk images failed to mount. Reason, error -536870208"

I have never seen this error before and I tested the files on my PowerBook G4 DVI with 10.3.1 and they open fine. Any ideas on this?

I have the same problem with my new iBook G4. I can't open disk images or Audio CDs. I would guess there's something with the update, because I managed to open one disk image, but after I updated, I couldn't open any more.

Now I've done a little research. There seems to be a conflict, and lots of people are having this problem: http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?128@176.Mc2IafvUluE.24@.599c3f63 The only solution seems to be to reinstall Mac OS X; or do some trick with reinstalling the update over the update (see the link).

There was a disscussion at Apple Support about this almost exact same problem. Good luck.

It seems doing a complete format and reinstall gets things working again. It's sad that this problem can happen but I'm glad I hadn't started installing new software yet.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
