Hello

I cant get rid of the permission errors marked in bold. Anybody know if they are dangerous?
The other permissions should not be a problem according to Apple.
I just think its strange that these permissions arent working, because I reinstalled the OS just now.

My system

G5 dual 1.8
2 Gb RAM
OSX Panter 10.3.9

Those are not permission errors, as is plainly evident by the wording of the phrase "We are using special permissions for..."

A permissions error would say "Permissions differ on..." followed by "Permissions corrected/repaired on...".

Those are simply status messages informing you that Mac OS X is using some non-standard permissions for certain files/folders. They will appear and continue to appear no matter how many times you repair permissions and they do not indicate that any permissions are incorrect.

You can safely ignore any line that begins with "We are using special...".

No problem -- also, don't get too caught up in repairing permissions, as it's never likely to fix anything. It's kind of a placebo, and at times can come in handy, but for the most part, repairing permissions doesn't do much. It'll rarely fix a computer that won't boot, won't mount a drive, or any other problem.

Have a read here... I have to agree with it for the most part (even though I still recommend repairing permissions alongside a disk repair procedure):

Thats a funny article....not everybody agrees about his thoughts though

No, they don't, but I'm more likely to trust a programmer for a decently-sized web company that some random commenter that happened upon his article... ;)

A lot of it is common sense, and a lot of it may be bad advice. He's a programmer. He knows the ins and outs of Mac OS X and, I think it's safe to say, is not afraid of any command line. For mere mortals, though, repairing permissions can do a lot that they normally wouldn't be able to do without the Terminal, and quickly.

I just don't think that repairing permissions will solve problems such as "my machine gets stuck at the gray screen" and "my pioneer dvr-106 won't read DVD-Rs anymore" and "my desktop disappeared!", which are very common here. Permissions aren't stopping the computer from booting, DVD-Rs from mounting or desktops disappearing. Repairing permissions DID come in VERY handy not too long ago -- apparently one of Quark's installers for version 6, if installed into a certain location, would screw up permissions for all files and folders in that entire directory (/Applications, usually). Repairing permissions fixed the majority of them easily.

It's just not as important as it's made out to be, I believe.
