Display problem

When I try to go to System Preferences -> Display to change the resolution of the display, the display window comes up but nothing loads.. I have no idea why, it just sits there. I know the problem is a bit vague, but has anyone had the same problem or have a solution for it? It'd be much appreciated, thanks.

--p.s. I'm running Mac OS X Panther ver. 10.3.8

do you have the displays menu item loaded in the menu bar? can you change resolutions from there? if so sounds like the issue is limited to just your System prefs.

if you don't have the display menu extra loaded, you can manually load it by double clicking on the .menu file located in:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Displays.menu

is this on a desktop or a laptop? what trouble shooting have you done already? zap the NVRAM and or PRAM? reset openfirmware?

It's a g4 450Mhz powermac w/ 768mb of ram, and no I haven't done any of what you suggested, I don't how to begin w/.. :p
