.dmg files problem

I can't seem to open .dmg files on my Imac which has Panther installed. I keep getting an error message. I read somewhere that .dmg files can cause problems. Anyone know how to fix this?

If you have FileVault turned on, turn that off and try. Also, repair Permissions and try. Restart the machne.

Plus, if bobw's suggestion doesn't work, you might want to try to re-install the 10.3.2 update. This helped a friend of mine out with almost the same problem.
