Dock Magnify problems

Hi there, I'm on a Mac Mini 1.42GHz w/ 512MB RAM and on an Erase & Install of Tiger.

When I have iTunes running playing a song, my dock magnify becomes less smooth. Sometimes the download animation in Safari (the progress bar) also does this.

Any fixes/information would be appreciated.

more ram?
512 should be plenty.

Did you JUST install tiger? The first hour or so you are going to notice slowdown because of Spotlight indexing. However, it shouldn't be that noticiable on a fresh install, because there isn't that much stuff to index.

I booted into safe mode, then rebooted. That seemed to fix the issue.

Also, I did an erase and install, so I never had to index. :D

Thanks for the help!

Spotlight still indexes your drive, regardless whether you clean install or not. ;) But it, of course, should take less time that way.

Hmm, I seem to be getting it again. Whenever iTunes is playing, the dock animations aren't as smooth.

I just tried to duplicate it on my

iMac 1GHz PowerPC G4
Flat panel
OS Tiger 10.4
512 MB DDR SDRAM
GeForce4 MX
VRAM 32 MB

and...it woiks just fine, I had Safari open, Mail running, Word 2004 running, TextEdit running, iTunes, and the dock mag works like a champ.

Good luck.

I've been running OS X now for four hours or so without using my IRC client, and I've had no slow downs. I'm thinking maybe it's the cause, leaking VRAM or something.

Run the activity monitor (or top) and see what's taking up so much CPU. Check your preferences and make sure that your processor performance is set to 'Highest' and not 'Automatic' (Yes, highest provides much more power in all the benchmarks I've seen).

You can use iostat to see if it's disk crunching also.

if you have ati radeon 9200, you dont have support for the core image of tiger. I have an ibook g4 with that graphic accelerator and panther was smoother with expose, the dock and some games

I just opened I tunes and started playing a song and then dragged my mouse across the dock and then closed itunes and run the mouse across the dock again and there is a noticable difference in the docks' reaction time. It is not so sluggish as to be unusable, but there does seem to be a delay incurred with iTunes playing a song - 15" PowerBook 1G RAM.
