Does iSync require a .mac account?

I want to sync my address book, calendar and mail between my iBook and my desktop G4. This would be done when they're in the same room, connected via either wifi or ethernet.

I get the idea it can't be done, but the iSync help file isn't all that clear to me.

Or perhaps a .mac account is required after all...

No. You can sync your contacts to your .mac but it's not required. If you have an iPod or a bluetooth phone, or a Palm, you can sync your address book with those using iSync.

As far as I know, there is no way other than a .Mac account to sync information between two Macs using iSync.
